About

I first went to Narragansett Park as a horse loving
child, never realizing that it had once been a race track. During
my childhood it was a fleamarket that I would visit with my grandfather,
and it would later become a discount retail store that I enjoy shopping
in.
I found something odd and interesting about the
building. It had a strange shape and there was an old Odds board,
really neat old sign and escaltors that went to a mysterious second
floor. Still I did not know exactly what this place once was.
In 2006 I read the book Seabiscuit, and I kept reading
about a place called Narragansett Park where Seabiscuit had raced.
Upon reading it was in Pawtucket, RI, I easily put two and two together
and discovered Narragansett Park.
I was born in 1979, the year after 'Gansett closed,
therefore I never got to see it in all it's glory. All I have seen
is the decaying remains of a once mighty grandstand; where millions
of race fans once gathered, and the land that once held a race track
where famous horses raced which now contains industrial buildings.
People ask me why I'm interested in preserving the
history of Narragansett Park and what I get out of it. For me it's
simple. I love horses and I love history and I don't wish to see
history lost forever. I get the thrill of the hunt in searching
for information and new knowledge which I enjoy retaining and sharing.
Looking over the internet, information about 'Gansett
is extremely limited. Without the help of many wonderful individuals
(please see the reference page) and wonderful auction finds, this
website would never have been possible.
Please share this site with others you know who
love horses, history, who live locally, have been to the track in
its glory days or just might be interested in learning. Please help
to preserve and pass on the history of Narragansett Park.
